American Tribal Style Belly Dance (ATS) is an improv form of belly dance created by FatChanceBellyDance director, Carolena Nericcio. Improv tribal dance is based on the concept of lead and follow. Specific cues allows a group of dancers to dance together without having to follow a specific choreography. The followers watch for cues to know what movement is being called by the leader and provides the ability to bring dancers together in dance. This movement vocabulary is known across the country and other parts of the world. Dancers who know ATS can dance with other ATS dancers without ever having dance together before.

Zafira Dance Company's performances are opulent vignettes that combine
bellydance with contemporary and ethnic dance forms. The result is an
ornate performance that blurs the boundary between old and new;
performer and audience; and earthy and elegant.

Guided by the mood of the music, Zafira draws the viewer into each
piece by shaping rhythm and melody into gesture and form. Liquid
movements, staccato accents and textured choreographies capture a
timeless beauty that expresses both the sensuality and strength of the
female form.

My new class sessions Start the First week of July 2008 at the Harbor East MAC. Get all the details here:
http://www.shemsdance.com/classes/classes.htm#classes then email me to reserve your spot, the come and dance!

So I've been prepping for the belly dance classes I'll be teaching this summer and they are going to be awesome!

In Belly dance Essentials we'll be working on finger cymbals (aka zills or sagat). We'll learn how to play some rhythms and basic patterns. we'll learn different tones you can make. We'll learn when to play and when not to play. We'll learn how to accent our playing and how to highlight our dancing. And we'll put in a lot of practice dancing and zilling at the same time. It will be hardcore sagat action.

In Technique and Musicality we will explore the Egyptian Oriental Entrance Piece. This is the most complex and nuanced piece in a dancer's routine. It is the first impression and the moment the dancer has to show she really knows her stuff. We will learn about the origins of this dance and the feeling connected with it. We will build and sharpen our technique and learn to utilize our muscles for polish and refinement. We will explore the music for deep understanding and we will dance like queens! The queens of raqs sharqi!

In Fundamentals of Performance Quality movement we will explore creating dances. We will analyze music, discuss how to connect with musical phrasing, delve into instrument driven movement, discuss staging, delve into building dance choreography and discuss tools for good improvisation. We will spend time with transitions between movement.

In Belly Dance Basics we will be building correct technique from the get-go. Isolations, footwork, technique building, arms, we will continue to work on these things and build in an ongoing manner. If you are just starting or still want to build your basic technique. This class will take it's time to breakdown, refine, discuss muscles to use and finding movement.

Sunrise belly dance will be moving to a new time in the wee hours of Friday morning. 6 am - This class is continual belly dance movement - we start with a nice warm up drill medium paced rhythmic steps, build into shimmy drills, slow down into undulating movements and then a little stretch at the end. I love this class because an hour of straight dance in the morning is a wonderful way to start the day. As a bonus, immediately following this class is Theresa Lummino's warm yoga flow class. Which I've taken and really enjoy (part of why I'm moving the class, so I can have that hour of belly dance followed by and hour of yoga, sweet.)

I might have to cut back on how many classes I can teach next fall due to school obligations, so help me make this summer rock in serious belly dance fashion. If you are interested, I've been dying to put together a hafla of awesome porportions - live Arabic band, both performance and open dancing, the best guest performers and you!

And if you are wondering "who the heck is this Shems person and why should I take from her?" Well, prepare yourself, I'm about to do some tooting of my own horn:

I've been studying this dance obsessively for the last 12 years, supplementing my dance education with modern, ballet, jazz, body conditioning for dancers, many, many folkloric forms, Middle Eastern history, Arabic, music lessons and more. I have studied and continue to study with many of the biggest stars of Oriental dance, American, Canadian, Turkish, Lebanese and Egyptian, the list is too long to fit here, but I post it on my website. This summer I'm off to study with Dina, Randa, Dandash and Mo Gedawi of Egypt and I've already attended the Turkish Folk Tours dance camp and taken several classes with Orit Maftsir of Israel.

I have worked professionally as a full time dancer in the past and I've been in very high demand at some of the most exclusive venues in DC. I'm respected by my peers in dance and loved by many of the venue owners and the Arabic community in DC and I'm growing in reputation in Baltimore. I've also been gaining a national reputation in the belly dance community and I've been asked to teach workshops back in Utah, North Carolina and now California, as well as here in our area in Virginia and Maryland and I've been asked to dance in selective shows in several different states across the country. I've won the hearts of several of the musicians I've worked with and could give you positive references from some pretty impressive names in our Middle Eastern music and dance community. I've won 2 awards at the 3 contests I've attended in the course of my dance career. One with my former troupe, performing my choreography and that of my troupe mate Sumra (they went on the next year without me to win again also utilizing another choreography of mine) and one as a soloist in the professional category at the East Coast classic.

I'm not just your run of the mill Belly Dance instructor who took a few years of classes from a local teacher, then decided to hang up her shingle. I know my stuff in a major way and I always continue to train. When I teach I also provide supplemental information on my website so that my students can be informed and intellectual in their understanding of the very rich dance form that this is.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing all the other belly dance teachers in Baltimore, there are a few in the area I really respect for the wonderful and unique things they have to offer as well. Different people have their different strengths. I just know what I have to offer is unique and valuable.

I'm dying to find those of you who are dying to take your dancing to the next level, who want to dig deeper, go further, become above the caliber of the average professional belly dancer in our community, who want to honor this art form by really doing it extra well and have a great time in the process. Oh yes, serious dancers. I want you. I even want the not so serious dancers who do it for fun or fitness. If you can have fun, get exercise and become a great dancer in the process, why not? It's a win, win, win situation.

And those of you who think it would be cool to learn to belly dance, but have been sitting on the fence. It's time to jump in. Belly dance isn't just a few new moves to do at the club or for your husband (or wife as the case may be). It's a wonderful social community, where women bond with and enjoy the company of other women. (The occasional brave man is embraced as well!) It is a door to some of the most incredible music and cultural experiences. It is an opportunity to tap into and release deep emotions. It is an opportunity to be more glamorous then you ever thought you would have a reason to be. It is a fountain of youth, whose gentle athleticism keeps you young in heart and younger looking, because of the joy of it. It is exercise that doesn't feel like exercise. It is an opportunity to appreciate the sexiness of your own body whatever shape you are. It is so worthwhile in a hundred ways.

Come play with me this summer. Let's Belly Dance!

ok, cheesy title - my beginning classes are filling and rolling along wonderfully, but I need a few more experienced dancers to take a chance on my advanced classes. I know I'm fairly new to Baltimore, but I'm not new to belly dance. I've choreographed award winning routines for my former troupe, I've helped people get past just doing the moves to really starting to understand the music and the culture behind belly dance. Here is what one of my former students had to say about my classes:

"Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your class. I took BD for 10 years from an teacher (and well know performer) in Texas who's method of teaching was either drills or strict choreographies. She is excellent and I learned the basic, however, something has always been missing. Although I am a soloist performer, I've never felt confident about my dancing.Anyway, I finally feel like I am learning how to perform, with feeling, knowledge and from the inside. Thanks."

This session my advanced "Musicality & Technique" class as well as my "Belly Dance Essentials" class will be focusing on Shaabi, Baladi and Al Jeel. Come on and check it out. I'll be addressing a new focus topic every couple of sessions (the schedule will soon be posted on my website) to help my students to become well rounded and very knowledgeable dancers. Here are the details:
American Tribal Style Belly Dance (ATS) is an improv form of belly dance created by FatChanceBellyDance director, Carolena Nericcio. Improv tribal dance is based on the concept of lead and follow. Specific cues allows a group of dancers to dance together without having to follow a specific choreography. The followers watch for cues to know what movement is being called by the leader and provides the ability to bring dancers together in dance. This movement vocabulary is known across the country and other parts of the world. Dancers who know ATS can dance with other ATS dancers without ever having dance together before.

Improv Tribal I- 11am- 12pm

Aura Movement

-------------------------------------------------------

Improv Tribal Belly Dance is a series of moves that are woven together through hand and verbal cues. In this sense, it becomes a universal dance form wherein anyone who learns the moves and their cues can dance together in an improvisational lead and follow fashion. It's a very liberating, proud and joyful dance form that celebrates women in all of their shapes, sizes, colors and emphasizes spontaneity, interaction and a fusion of both individual and group dynamics. Class will focus on American Tribal Style moves as well as other fusion and tribal choreographies that draw from various forms of dance, including Cabaret, African, Indian, Middle Eastern and Greek. Note: This is not an ATS only class. Improv Tribal Bellydance mixes ATS movements with various Improv Tribal Combos not created by Carolena Nericcio and Fatchance Bellydance.

Level I: 11am-12pm This class is suited for beginners and those with previous improv tribal dance experience who are still focusing on perfecting the core movements of Improv Tribal Bellydance. This class will refresh basics for those with previous experience and teach those with little or no experience the posture, formations and movements that comprise improv tribal bellydance. This is a progressive class which will focus on solidifying the fundamentals of improv tribal bellydance. By the end of this course, students will have a firm grasp of basic improv tribal bellydance movements and will be introduced to the formations used in leading/following. IMPORTANT NOTE: Please come in form fitting clothes that ensure easy movement and comfort.

Level II: 12pm- 1pm This class is focused towards students with 1+ years of Improv Tribal Bellydance experience who are completely comfortable with leading and following the basic movements introduced in Improv Tribal I. This class will focus on incorporating more traveling movements and turns, as well as touching on music interpretation and soloing. Studentes may only register for this class with the approval of Lyra (that's me!) to ensure that they have fully grasped all level I movements.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please come in form fitting clothes that ensure easy movement and comfort. NO COIN SCARVES OR DISTRACTING ACCESSORIES ALLOWED. Please be kind and respect the right of your fellow students to learn in non-distracting environment. Shawls and hip wraps are fine, as long as I can still easily see your muscles/hip movements.

Online registration will be available shortly via www.kallistitribal.com or you can pay for the full session at the first class. Please email me at lyra AT kallistitribal DOT com to reserve your space, as well as to ask any questions about level placement. Classes will be limited to 15 Students max, to ensure proper attention is given to each student. NOTE: this class is not featured in the "First Class Free" promotion offered by Aura Movement.

Hope to see you in class!

We will be posting many of these on the BIRDS’ site shortly. If anyone took pictures during the Saturday street fair, we are looking for new photos for the website. You will receive proper photo credit and a link to your web page, should you have one and wish a link.

On to other matters, John Millen has informed me that he wishes to step down as president of the board, after many years of dedicated service to the festival. I congratulate John on his extensive commitment and dedication to the community. He has expressed his desire to continue serving on the board in a sort of emeritus capacity. Institutional memory is vital to the success of any organization.

So where does this leave BIRDS? Well, to put on a festival that can reach a maximum potential public requires people who can work together to create the event. We need people who have fundraising & grant writing experience. Additionally, we need people who have skills in promotion & marketing…audio, photo & video production… programming & logistics... community education, etc. We are looking for imagination, innovation and creative problem solving.

This is a tall task!!! However, it cannot be done successfully by just a few people. This is especially true when taking into account that everyone has a life outside BIRDS: i.e. work, school, family and other obligations. BIRDS is a community-based organization that needs a strong community behind it.

Now, to next topic: the BIRDS’ Board. I am announcing that there are six to ten openings for new board members. We are looking for people who want to be community builders and who wish to influence the future direction of the Baltimore International Rhythm Festival. The board needs people who can do all those items I addressed above, plus bookkeeping and general office assistance.

There are no limits to the possibilities that can be accomplished if we work together. That said, it is important for everyone to realize that for BIRDS to move forward we need people to step up and take on these various tasks.

The beauty of this is that no one will be asked to do anything outside their expertise. If we can get enough folks to become involved, then no one will have to work too hard and much more will get accomplished. It is truly up to the community to decide the direction of the organization. It should never reflect just one point of view, but many.

Well, there you have it. I am challenging everyone to get involved. It’s now up to all of us to make this wonderful organization achieve its fullest potential.

Aleichem Shalom…

Get ready for a new ten week set of classes with Lyra of Kallisti Tribal!

Saturday Jan. 5- March 8, 2008
$15/class for drop-in, $12/class if you register for the full 10 week session
location TBA ( FInalizing location in Baltimore, MD... just wanted to give a head's up on this class).

The class will focus on some American Tribal Style moves as well as other fusion and tribal choreographies that draw from various forms of dance, including Cabaret, African, Indian, Middle Eastern and Greek. NOTE: This class is not an ATS only class! This class meshes some ats movements with other improvisational tribal combos.

11am-12pm: Improv Tribal I

This class is focused towards students who are new to Improv Tribal Bellydance or need to work on solidifying the basic movements before moving on to Improv Tribal II. Class will focus on posture, basic slow and fast movements and formation. Emphasis will be placed on learning the stylistic differences that are characteristic of tribal bellydance- carriage of the body, arm movements, floreos, hip work, etc. By the end of this class, students should be comfortable following a leader in formation through these basic movements and can even try out leading themselves.

12pm-1pm: Improv Tribal II

This class is tailored for students with at least one year of Improv Tribal Bellydance instruction who are comfortable with basic posture, formation and lead/follow format. Improv Tribal II will be a more intense class in which we will be focusing on the finer technique of basic improv tribal movements, as well as the lead/follow/chorus format. Students are required to attempt to lead movements in each class, as this is an intermediate-begginer class. In order to join this class you must be proficient in the following:

-tribal posture
-floreos
-tribal arm placement
-basic egyptian w/half turn
-turkish/turkish shimmy
-undulations
-3/4 shimmy
-arabic
-snake arms
-taxim

By the end of this session, students should be able to fully understand the lead/follow/chorus dynamic, as well as have a much more solid grasp of the basic tribal movements and transitioning between them in a dance setting. This class will also focus on incorporating these movements to music and each class will end with a short free dance period.

If for any reason you are wondering which class you should take, please contact me via tribe or email me at lyra at kallistitribal DOT com and give me a resume of past classes you've taken and previous dance experience. You may also contact me at the above email to set up a private or group evaluation for class placement. Please take care to consider which class would best benefit your skill level. I reserve the right to take students who are not ready for Improv Tribal II and place them into Improv Tribal I at my own discretion.

NOTE: In order to keep classes economic for everybody, each class has a 5 student minimum that must be pre-registered two weeks before the class or classes will be cancelled. Each class will be limited to ten students maximum in order to ensure that every students gets personal attention. Please contact me at lyra AT kallistitribal DOT com for pre-registration information. If classes are cancelled, any students pre-registered for classes will receive or a full refund OR can apply their payment towards private lessons.

Thanks and I hope to see you all in class!

Thursday evening, I need help decorating the main stage, inside St John’s – Clark Room.

For Friday, we need help with selling tickets and security. We might, also need help selling bottled water and other beverages.

Saturday, will also need people to sell tickets and handle basic security tasks. In addition, we will need people to help with the outdoor festival stage, assisting groups with transitioning on and off stage, supporting the MC & Host of the Street Festival stage, Stu Needel etc. Further, the World Rhythm Drum Circus will be set-up and in full swing. This is a veritable percussionist’s playground that is completely kids safe: percussion instruments from all over the world and several junk yards. We will need fellow drummers to help supervise this wonderful activity.

There you have it. This call for help covers much of what we need to make this event really work as smoothly as possible. That said, there is only one thing that I can think of that we need more than anything else, and that is for you to attend and bring all of your friends with you. With out the community, the Baltimore International Rhythm Festival would be nothing more than a nice idea, waiting for someone to show up.

Make a difference and contribute to BIRDS future. You can make a tax-deductible contribution to the Baltimore International Rhythm & Drumming Society on-line at: www.drumtogether.net or during the festival. Your financial support will help BIRDS be able to create unique drumming and educational opportunities for youth and adults. It truly does take a village.

Wanna learn some ATS? Have some Fatchance DVDs, but you can't commit to practicing? How's about we all get together for some ATS hangouts?

I wanted to test the waters to see if there's enough interest to start up a group for ATS Hangouts. Here's the low-down. We get a group of people together, rent a space, bi-weekly to start, and watch Fatchance DVDs to brush up on and learn new ATS moves. All levels are welcome, as we would be learning from DVDs, so it would be great for beginners and good freshening up for more advanced dancers.

Meetings would be structured as follows:

30 min for warm-up and drills
1 hr for DVD learning
15min-1/2 hour for dancing together and practicing moves
cool down

Note: this would NOT be Kallisti or any other tribal ATS/Improv troupes involved teaching the moves. We would be following Fatchance's DVDs (and maybe BlackSheep's if we felt like it) to the letter, no changes or modifications on moves (you can take them home and mess with them as you see fit, but we're trying to keep it pure ATS for this group's purposes).

Cost would be the price of the rental space for two hours split between participants. We're hoping to keep it to $10 each, if we have enough interested parties. I'm looking to start this up in a about a month or so down the line, as it will take a while to secure space and whatnot.

Interested? Get back to me via Tribe and let me know which weeknights work for you and weekend times.

Last night I checked out Melissa and Miranda's (of Serpentina, they danced at the 5 Seasons this month) class at Charm City (formerly Midtown Yoga). It is Wednesday at 7:45pm - classes are drop in ($14) or you can buy class cards. They also recommended the Transformational Dance class on Sundays.

Sorry 'bout the reminders, but we're getting to the wire and only half-way there.............

After a great initial response to the workshop, we still have slots for the workshop..................with it getting so close, and still about 9 participants away from a minimum attendance, this workshop is in danger of being cancelled, which would be a shame.....

I understand the many concerns for delay, but in order to keep this workshop as scheduled, we need at least 9 more people MINIMUM to register or COMMIT by 6/20, we'd love more of course, and this workshop is worthwhile, fun and beneficial, regardless of your style.............if we can't confirm by then, the workshop would be cancelled, but we can avoid that...........

She will be teaching torso/hip/ab articulation and isolation, as well as theatricalized skirt dance...............so there's something for everyone........additionally, she'll be performing her oriental and ethnic at the show, as would participants of the workshop.......(slots for that are first come first in), so we can't miss this unique opportunity, as she's not in the Baltimore area often...........

If you have not yet registered, you can do so at www.barefootdragon.com via paypal (just add $1.95 for the fee), or you may contact me privately, or call 443-421-6144 for other options, or to commit and/or other arrangements. The website also provides the full schedule....................

Please join us in welcoming Artemis back into this wonderful community, great studio and amazing dancers.............there will be vending, many restaurants in the area, and the show is part of the fee, and guests are welcome for $10.....

Hi Baltimore Dance Peops,

Okay, I'm just floating the idea. But I was thinking to sponser an event with a full Arabic band here in Baltimore. I'd be bringing in musicians from DC but I was wondering if y'all would support such an event and come out for it?

It probably wouldn't be more than a couple dancers officially performing with the band (of which I would plan to be one of course :-), but the band would play for open dancing and I'm hoping it would be a kickin' wild Arabic dance party! (not to give away too much, but this would be a Thursday night thing, since many of the musicians have regular weekend gigs.)

3 questions:

1-Does this sound like an event you would attend?

2-If not, what would make it an event you would want to attend?

3-If so, does this sound like an event you would attend regularly, say once a month?

Please share your feedback.

Thanks,

Shems :-)
